Bernadette was my eldest child. She developed asthma when she was 8yrs old but it was well
controlled by her inhalers. When she was 13 she was hospitalised for the first time.
Bernadette loved football and supported Celtic. She bought her first season ticket when she was 21
and it was a dream come true for her. As her asthma worsened Bernadette was retired from her work
just before her 21st birthday but her football gave her something to focus on. In fact, when she was
admitted to hospital usually the first question was " Where are Celtic playing this week-end"? if
the answer was at Home the doctors knew then they were in for a hard time as Bernadette would want
to be out for the Game!!! If all else failed she would sign herself out!!As a result of her asthma
Bernadette wasn't able to socialise as pubs, clubs etc. were too smoky.
Bernadette had her last asthma attack on Thursday 31st October 2001 just 19 days after her 29th
birthday, she suffered irreversible brain damage and was in a coma for 10 weeks. She died peacefully
on 11th January 2002 with me by her side.
Later on in August that year I walked my other daughter down the aisle at her wedding. Although not
there in person Bernadette was definitely there in spirit. In 2004 I became a granma for the first
time. Bernadette would have loved her little niece and would have thoroughly spoiled her.
Bernadette was not only my lassie she was a sister, a granddaughter, a niece, a cousin. Everyone
misses her so much and remembers her in their own way. We know she looks after us and she still
often makes her presence felt around the house.

fundraising

Hi Berns, just dropped by to say we are doing some fundraising in your memory. There's a few of us doing a ladies driving challenge and among the vehicles we will be a double decker bus, a JCB, an artic. lorry and a fire engine with firemen!! What do you think of that.
Peter graduated from uni yesterday and your Gran & I were through in Edinburgh to see him get his degree it was lovely and I wished you could have been there.
I'm hoping to get some people to abseil again this year as every penny for asthma is good and maybe they will find a cure someday soon.
Next week starts the European season for us so start working youe magic. Love you& miss you loads. Hail Hail x x x

Hi Berns popped in to let you know I am thinking of you .... again. Elizabethe & Rowan send their love too. Rowan graduated from nursery yesterday and she was so excited. It's at times like this I realise how much I miss you as I can't share these special days with you. Rowan speaks about you so oftyen I'm sure people must think she actually knew you. I was out giving another talk about Asthma as people don't realise how badly you can be affected. Many people don't realise it can be terminal as yous was. So by spreading the word I hope I am doing some good.I just didn't think you would have died from Asthma I always thought that a cure would have been found in time.
Any way Bernadette there are no more hospitals. needles or doctors shouting and being abusive towards you now, you are in a much better place where you can now breathe easily. Hopefully with all the research going on now a cure maybe found sooner rather than later.take care and HAIL HAIL,x x x

To my lovely lassie....

Hi Bernadette,
Just popping into say Hello. How are you coping without the footie? I am missing it as I usually do my housework whilst listening to it, so as you can imagine not much housework is being done!!
Elizabeth was doing a boot sale to sell some of Rowan's toys, clothes and books etc. it was just up at Polmadie not far from where we stayed. I think she was quite happy with what she made. Tere are big changes at our old place there's even houses in the park!! Can you believe that??

Hi Bernadette I just had to let you know that John,Arthur,Peter,Marc and AnnMarie are all away to the match at Parkhead to pay tribute to Tommy Burns somehow I think you have the best seat of all because you'll be with Tommy in Football heaven. It must be great. I gave Peter your Celtic top to wear so a little bit of you will be down here too.
Rowan and Elizabeth are up in Aberdeen visiting friends so I am enjoying the quietness. I was looking in you chest of drawers last night and came across one of you "Oor Wullie" books. I must have overlooked it when I packed the others away. It certainly put a smile on my face and brought a tear to my eye. I am so proud to say I am/was your mum. Thank you my lovely daughter for being you. All my love. MUM x x

Birthdays

Hello my lovely girl,
well I'm another year older now. OUCH! I was thinking back over our time together remembering the lovely birthday lunches we had and also the ones we missed because you were in hospital yet again. But we always made up for it ( or tried to ) when you came home.
You suffered so much Bernadette but showed a great fighting spirit. I am so proud to call you my darling daughter. You faced up to whatever life threw at you and got on with living as best as you could. When I look back over your life it sometimes feels as though it all happened to someone else then the pain of your absence hits me. You are my inspiration Bernadette and I know you are looking after me. God Bless you my darling. See you on the other side of somewhere. x x x
